Earlier that day, witnesses described Payne’s behavior at the hotel as erratic. They reported seeing him smash a laptop in the lobby, prompting hotel staff to call emergency services about an aggressive guest.

Shortly after 5 p.m., he fell from his room’s balcony. Authorities continue to investigate whether the fall was accidental or intentional and are examining the circumstances leading up to the incident.

Payne’s death occurred over a week after he reunited with Horan in Buenos Aires, sharing the moment on social media. He attended Horan’s October 3 concert and documented their time together on Snapchat.

Payne expressed his excitement at the concert, sharing a photo of his close friend’s performance captured from the venue’s large screen.

In another picture he shared, Payne captured the audience with their phones held up and the purple-lit stage as he was proud of his friend.

Payne also posted a backstage photo with Horan. In the image, Payne wore a dark-colored jacket over a light shirt, while Horan sported a striped shirt. Both appeared in high spirits.

The last photos Payne shared from Argentina became his final moments with Horan. Following his passing, the remaining bandmates released a statement on October 17, expressing their devastation.

While they plan to speak more on the subject later, they emphasized that their immediate focus is on remembering Payne and supporting his family and friends during this difficult time.

In separate tributes, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Harry Styles reflected on their cherished memories with their late bandmate.

For his part, Tomlinson penned his own emotional tribute, describing Payne as a “brother” and praising his talents and kind soul. He reflected on their history together, dating back to their first meeting when Payne was 16.

He highlighted Payne’s influence in shaping One Direction and shared how they had planned to work together again. He also vowed to support his friend’s son, Bear, as a lifelong “uncle.”

Following suit, Malik posted his deeply personal tribute on Instagram. “I never got to thank you for supporting me through some of the most difficult times in my life,” he wrote.

“When I was missing home as a 17 yr old [sic] kid you would always be there with a positive outlook and reassuring smile and let me know you were my friend and that I was loved,” he noted.

After Malik, Styles came forward with his heartfelt words about Payne. “His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honour to be alongside him as he did it,” he wrote. The “Watermelon Sugar” singer also expressed his sympathy for the people who loved his former bandmate.
